Open spots on LAH planning commission

Applications are being accepted for two appointments to the planning

commission for four-year terms beginning July 1. The council will

have interviews before the June 19 council meeting and make appointments

at that time.

In addition, there are vacancies on several of the town's standing

committees. Vacancies or term expirations will allow the city

council to make appointments to environmental design and protection

committee, pathways- recreation and parks committee, safety committee,

Joint Volunteer Awards and a youth commissioner.

Applications are available in the City Clerk's Office at Town

Hall, 26379 Fremont Road, during office hours (8 a.m. to noon

and 1-5 p.m.).

MV Library needs books

Although the Mountain View Library is closed for construction,

and the temporary library is not yet open, the Friends of the

Library are operating and are still in need of public book donations

for its twice-a-year and bi-monthly lobby book sales.

The public is urged to donate books by depositing them in the

marked slot in the library annex building on the corner of Mercy

Olde Towne Band summer concerts

Ye Olde Towne Band has scheduled a series of Sunday outdoor concerts

at Shoup Park, on University Avenue in Los Altos. The concerts,

which feature music ranging from marches to popular musicals,

are set for 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 30, July 28, Aug. 25 and Sept.

29. Admission is free.

The band is sponsored by the Sertoma, Quota, Kiwanis and Rotary

clubs of Los Altos.

Camera operators sought by VEGA

The City of Los Altos volunteer program, VEGA, Volunteers Enriching

Government Action, needs people to operate the remotely controlled

TV cameras for city council and planning commission meetings.

Training with easy to follow directions will be provided for qualified

candidates.

Meetings are held on Tuesday and Thursday nights. After initial

training, a six-month commitment is required. For more information,

Loyola Corners photo exhibit

The Los Altos History House Museum's new photographic exhibit,

"Historic Loyola Corners ... Then & Now," at 8 a.m.

runs through July 31 in the History House Museum, 51 S. San Antonio

Road, behind the Los Altos Library.

The exhibit will open for general viewing at noon until 4 p.m.

and on Wednesday from 1-5 p.m.

The museum's Loyola Corner's exhibit will feature photographs

of the area in the days of apricot, prune and walnut orchards.

Nostalgic photos of Southern Pacific railroad trains stopping

at Loyola Corners are sure to rekindle memories of times past.

Other photos and artifacts reflecting the first businesses in

the area will also be on display for the three-month exhibit.

Activity guide mailed to residents

The Los Altos Recreation Summer Activity Guide will be mailed

to Los Altos and Los Altos Hills residents on Friday. It will

list all classes and programs for the June through August summer

session.

Moffett Field info hotline

The City of Mountain View has established a 24-hour telephone

hotline for information about Moffett Field. The hotline has been

created to provide residents with information and periodic updates

about Moffett. Residents will be able to hear information as well

as leave messages expressing their opinions and concerns. The

telephone number for the hotline is 903-6616.

Foothill Stamp Club open to collectors

All persons interested in stamp collecting as a hobby may join

the Foothill Stamp Club, which regularly meets 7:30 p.m. the first

and third Mondays of the month on the second floor of Great Western

Bank, 199 Main St. in Los Altos.

When a fifth Monday occurs in a month, the club holds a trading

session only 7:30 p.m. at The Bank of Los Altos, Suite No. 1,

Widows and Widowers Association

The Mid-Peninsula Widows and Widowers Association meets every

Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, 460, S.

El Monte Ave., Los Altos. The MPWWA helps people begin a new life

following the death of a spouse. All widows and widowers of the

area are invited to attend.

Senior exemptions from utility tax

If you are a senior citizen living in the City of Los Altos, you

may be eligible for exemption from the utility user taxes found

on your gas, electric, telephone, cable television, and water

bills.

Basic requirements for exemption require you to be age 65 or over,

reside in a household where the gross annual income of all residents

does not exceed $25,200 annually and not be otherwise reimbursed

for the utility charges upon which the tax is based.

Friendly Visiting Service seeking volunteers

Friendly Visiting Service is seeking new volunteers to make weekly

one-hour visits to lonely older Los Altos residents who live alone

or in care homes and who have few or no family or friends in the

area.

The volunteers are needed in four Friendly Visiting Service programs.

An interview and four hours of training are required.

Chicken pox vaccines available free

With chicken pox season coming, doctors at Lucile Salter Packard

Children's Hospital are offering free vaccinations to children

aged 2 to 12 who have never had chicken pox. This study will evaluate

the immune response to the new chicken pox vaccine. The vaccine,

blood draws and doctor visits are free.

Wildlife Rescue offering classes

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. (WRI) will be holding classes for people

interested in nursing injured animals back to health for release

into the environment.

WRI will be needing a large number of volunteers in the next few

months and will offer classes to those who are interested in being

trained.

WRI has a speakers bureau, which is a group of urban wildlife

specialists who speak to groups of all sizes and take along animals

for "hands-on" demonstrations.

Los Altos Rotaract Club seeking new members

The Los Altos Rotaract Club, a community service group sponsored

by the Los Altos Rotary Club and Rotary International, is seeking

career-minded individuals between the ages of 18-35 as new members.

Through club programs, business meetings and service projects,

members can develop personal and professional marketing skills.

Recently, the club has volunteered to help at local charity events.

Rotaract meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 6:30

p.m. on the second floor of Great Western Bank, 199 Main St.,

in Los Altos.

Docent training from MROSD

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is now registering

volunteers for its docent program, which provides guided hikes,

walks and tours to the public throughout the year.

The program attracts adults of all ages who are interested in

the preservation of open space and who would enjoy learning about

the natural and human history of the midpeninsula, and sharing

their knowledge with others.

History House needs docents

The History House Museum needs docents to volunteer one day every

two months on either Wednesday or Saturday afternoons.

Food Closet needs volunteers

The Food Closet needs volunteers to help sort and carry donations,

organize merchandise and hand out food bags. Volunteers may work

from 9 a.m. to noon or 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.

The Food Closet serves low-income families and individuals in

Mountain View and Los Altos. If you are interested in volunteering,

Volunteers needed for trail projects

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District has opportunities

for volunteers to help with trail and revegetation projects on

its open space preserves.

Volunteer space is limited, so volunteers should call and register

at least one week in advance. Training, tools and supervision

are provided.

Host an exchange student

Local families interested in hearing a new language, tasting another

culture and seeing with their own eyes how easy it is to make

new friends who will last a lifetime are invited to learn more

about hosting a Youth For Understanding (YFU) International Exchange

student.

All kinds of families are selected to host YFU students: married

couples with or without children, single parents, as well as families

with teenagers. Host families provide room, board, guidance and

the experience of what everyday life is like in America.

Sertoma Club seeks new members

The Los Altos Sertoma Club meets every Friday at 7:15 a.m. for

breakfast at the Lyons Restaurant on El Camino Real in Los Altos.

The meeting consists of fellowship and speakers from all walks

of life. Sertoma's primary objectives are to serve the community

with emphasis on speech and hearing.

City of Los Altos seeks volunteers

Volunteers with good clerical skills are in need with the Cityof Los Altos in either the fire department or building department.

Good typing skills are needed to work at the fire station on acomputer data entry project. Organizational skills with specialattention being paid to small details is needed to help the buildingdepartment prepare completed permits for microfilming.
