employees 3 percent raise

At their June 25 meeting, Los Altos City Council members unanimously approved a 3 percent pay raise for the 45 full- and part-time city employees who are not represented by labor unions.

When it went into effect Monday, this raise affected those "independently represented employees and department heads" of the city of Los Altos, said Layne Long, assistant to the city manager.

They last received a raise a year ago and it, too, was for 3 percent.

June 25 the council also passed a 2.75 pay raise for next year, beginning July 1, 1997.

To determine a raise, "we look at a variety of factors," Long said. "You look at turnover rate, at recruitment - the ability to attract qualified people."

The consumer price index for May 1995 to May 1996 was 2.9 percent.

The city employs a total of 153 people, Long said. Those other than the 45 all belong to a union and were not part of the June 25 council vote.

Of these 153 employees, 36 in the police department belong to the Peace Officers' Association, 36 in the fire department belong to the International Association of Firefighters and 26 in the city service center belong to the Los Altos Public Employees Association.

Negotiations with each of these unions is continuing, said city councilwoman Kris Casto. "It's a process."
