History House BBQ

fund-raiser Sunday

The Los Altos History House will hold a barbecue dinner and dessert fund-raiser 5 p.m. Sunday at the History House Museum, 51 S. San Antonio Road.

Featured will be musical selections from "Big River," performed by Los Altos Youth Theatre, and a sing-along with Bob and Bill. Cost is $25 per person. Reservations are due by Monday, July 29.

Overnight hike

offered by MROSD

For the final Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District hike in July, docent Melody McGruder takes hikers on a full-moon overnight at the top of the Black Mountain leaving Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and returning Sunday at 10 a.m.

You will be hiking up the Waterwheel Creek Trail to enjoy the sunset and the full moon rising while enjoying dinner and pleasant conversation. After the sun sets, docent Bonnie Hasson will tell Native American folklore stories.

Docent Roger Myers will lead a round of songs on guitar. Detailed instructions will be sent with your reservation confirmation.

Free composting

workshop offered

Master composters from the University of California Cooperative Extension will be demonstrating home composting techniques for Los Altos residents at a free workshop scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 17 in Room 3 at Grant Park. Registrations can be made by calling (408) 299-4147.

This workshop introduces gardeners to the basic steps in starting and maintaining healthy compost bins. Within three months of attending a workshop, backyard compost can be used to amend existing garden soil, or be used as a mulch or as part of a potting mix. It also can help reduce the amount of kitchen waste going to the landfill.

An amusing look

at portrait painting

Why do people commission portraits? What do they hope their portrait will convey to the viewer? Kay Payne will provide an entertaining look at portraits in her lecture today at the Los Altos Main Library at 7:30 p.m.

This free-of-charge lecture will be held in the Community Room of the library and is sponsored by the Los Altos Library, the Friends of the Library, and the City of Los Altos Arts Committee.

Puppet performers

The Caterpillar Puppet performers are guaranteed to generate giggles. They will be presenting the bilingual puppet show "Pinata" today at 3 p.m. in the Program Room at the Los Altos Main Library, 13. S. San Antonio Road. This 45-minute presentation is for children ages 5 and up.
