Pictured left to right, Carol Scharz, Dwight Fox, Enid Fox, Dick Hasenpflug and Barbara Loebner of Los Altos Sister Cities display some of the donated pediatric wheelchairs that will be sent to Syktyvkar, Russia. Los Altos Sister Cities, Inc. is collecting donations of new toys, pediatric wheelchairs and other medical equipment and supplies (no medications accepted) to be sent to the Russian sister city, Syktyvkar (pronounced: sic-tiv-car). Sister Cities organizers said the toys will be donated to infants and young school aged children in the orphanage and the hospitals, while the medical supplies will go to hospitals in Syktyvkar. Infant and toddler toys are most needed, along with new crayons and coloring books. Organizers are asking that contributions not include battery-powered toys. Toys may be dropped off at Los Altos City Hall, 1 N. San Antonio Road, weekdays during August from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To make a donation of medical supplies or equipment, call Dick Hasenpflug at 941-8949. A shipment of medical equipment and dialysis machines was sent to Syktyvkar a couple of years ago. Los Altos Sister Cities members have made follow-up trips to Syktyvkar carrying additional supplies and providing technical advice. Sister Cities' assistance with medical supplies stems from a visit by a delegation of doctors who received some dialysis training at El Camino Hospital. Currently, Los Altos Sister Cities members are home hosting two students from the Syktyvkar Teachers Training Institute while they participate in the International Work/Educational Exchange program of Foothill College. Four residents will represent Los Altos in Syktyvkar this month at the celebration of the 75th birthday of the Republic of Komi, of which Syktyvkar is the capital. Those interested in more information about Los Altos Sister Cities may call Carol Scharz, Los Altos City Clerk, at 948-1491, ext. 204, or Richard Fimmel, president, at 948-0733. |
