The Child Development Center (CDC) cares for more than 80 children under kindergarten age whose parents attend the Adult Education Center. Most of the parents are studying English as a second language but some are teen parents who have returned to school to complete their high school diplomas or general education development (GED). Approximately two years ago, plans for a new playground began. A $750 donation from The Los Altos Parent Preschool (LAPP), another MV-LA Adult Education Center program, helped fund the project. "We've been rethinking the backyard play area for some time and we wanted it to be more education friendly for the children while appealing to a wide age range," said Laura Stefanski, assistant director of the Child Development Center. With LAPP's donation, the center was able to by the supplies needed to build a shade arbor and benches around a sandbox but not someone to build them. Two local Eagle Scouts from Troop No. 33, Greg Johnson and Colvin Pitts, volunteered to work on the shade arbor and benches this past spring, as part of their Eagle Scout project . The sandbox was built by a retired Los Altos resident. A hard plastic climbing structure, with a slide, monkey bars, tunnels and ladders, was also added to the site.. Abbott Laboratories in Mountain View donated $2,500 and Mountain View Kiwanis Club donated $1,000, which covered costs of the climbing structure, installation, construction, and woodchips. |
