The Palo Alto-area American Red Cross recently received a grant for $2,500 from The Allstate Foundation for its Safe Ride program, which provides free, confidential rides home on weekend nights for high school students.

"This grant represents a very important commitment by The Allstate Foundation to the community in which our employees and customers live and work," said Kelly Noll, human resource manager.

Safe Ride was established in 1984 by a handful of Palo Alto High School students after one of their peers had been killed by a drunk driver.

Currently, more than 400 volunteers from Palo Alto, Gunn, St. Francis, Menlo, Pinewood, Mountain View, Los Altos and Castilleja high schools are involved in the program.

The Allstate Foundation, founded by Allstate Insurance Company in 1952, provides financial support of programs in the areas of automobile and highway safety, homes and housing and safety and security.
