Town Crier Staff Report

Samantha Shaver spikes her way back into the Bay Area this weekend when the 1996 Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League holds court at the Main Beach in Santa Cruz.

The former Los Altos High star captains Team Norelco, which will take on four other women's teams in the four-on-four tournament. Round-robin play begins 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday, with the final slated for noon Sunday.

So far this season, Shaver, 27, has amassed 165 kills and 311 digs in 40 round-robin matches, and helped Team Norelco win three championships. The Santa Cruz event will be the women's final stop on their 12-city national tour.

While at Los Altos High, Shaver's squad won Northern California and Central Coast Section titles, and her UCLA team notched the NCAA crown in 1990.

The San Diego resident and outside hitter also played for the USA Women's National Team from 1992-95 and was the beach volleyball league's defensive player of the year in 1994 as a member of Team Champion.

Four men's teams will also compete in Santa Cruz this weekend, with the final set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
