First, friendly Palo Alto served up some food for Mountain View, and then the Spartans returned the favor by beating the Vikings for the first time in two years. "There's a good relationship between the two schools. The kids have a good time," said Mountain View Coach Jerry Gosland. In the 5-2 win - which put Mountain View even with Paly at 7-1 atop the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division - singles players Stephanie Fong, Vicki Chen and Wen-Ai Yu all kept their undefeated streaks intact, and the Spartans' doubles teams also showed some signs of life. Clinching the victory at No. 3 doubles was the Spartan tandem of Chung Nguyen-Jennifer Kuo, which triumphed 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. And although they lost, the other pairs of Meredith Hughes-Monseratt Corsino and Wen-Chih Yu-Neeru Batra played Paly tough. "The doubles really picked up. It's the best they have played all year - it was a psychological boost," Gosland said. Perhaps giving Mountain View (10-1 overall) its biggest lift was singles winner Denise Olmos, who won 6-1, 6-3 and was the first to finish her match. "Singles has been carrying us all year, it's the heart of the club," the coach said. In their previous meeting this season - in which Mountain View supplied the eats - Palo Alto prevailed 4-3. VOLLEYBALL: The Spartans won their fourth straight match, a 15-4, 15-7, 16-14 triumph over Lynbrook, on Thursday and improved to 4-2 in the SCVAL De Anza Division. Last week, Mountain View (18-5 overall) also downed Monta Vista 15-5, 12-15, 16-14, 15-10. |
