The event, the 30th year LAVA has sponsored the celebration, will include a costume contest and entertainment. Downtown businesses will also participate in trick or treating for costumed kids. A smiling pumpkin face will be posted at participating businesses. Los Altos kids may trick or treat at participating stores, visit with creepy live creatures in the Community Plaza, show off in a costume parade, and watch the surprise appearance of a favorite celebrity witch atop The Los Altos Town Crier building at a secret witching hour. Activities from 3-5 p.m. will feature a "Creepy Creatures Animal Show" that will include a live snake, bat and tarantula for viewing; Halloween storytelling, safe Halloween tips from the Los Altos Police Department and a wicked witch. A costume contest, set for 3:30 p.m. in the Community Plaza (State and Main streets), offers prizes for most creative costume in three age categories: 3 years and younger; 4-6 years; and 7-10 years. In conjunction with the "Spooktacular" event, the Los Altos Recreation Department held its 33rd annual window painting and display contest last week for fourth through eighth grade students. A recreation organizer said 87 students painted more than 90 merchant windows. Window contest judges were Carol Curran, economic development coordinator; Bruce Barton, editor of the Los Altos Town Crier; and Bill Goss, American Legion representative. The American Legion is donating shopping bags for trick-or-treaters and their parents. First prize for the window painting contest is a $50 savings bond from Comerica Bank. Costume contest winners will receive prizes from a variety of downtown Los Altos merchants. This year's Halloween event will feature a Something Special Tree in Community Plaza and a corn candy guessing contest. All activities for this Spooktacular Smash will be on Main and State streets in downtown Los Altos. For more information on the Halloween event, call the Los Altos Village Association at 949-5282.
