William Carter, a long-time resident of Los Altos Hills who was drawn to the creative potential of photography years ago, will explain his style, captured in his new book, "Illuminations," 7:30 p.m. Thursday, in Heintzelman's Bookstore, 205 State St., Los Altos.

The slick-paper book is a collection of nude photographs taken since 1982. "One reason I concern myself with the nude is I am concerned with universals," Carter said. "Clothing is specific to time, place, culture. The body is not. I work within the broad tradition of the nude in western art, not so much thematically as formally. I strive for Aquinas' wholeness, harmony and radiance."

Carter's works have been published in Life Magazine. He also created a book of images titled "Ghost Towns of the West." In 1985, he published a book on an old love, New Orleans jazz, called "Preservation Hall."

"Illuminations" is printed and bound in Italy. The publisher is Editions One, 41 Sutter St., San Francisco. For more information, call 941-1842.
