Town Crier Staff Report

The Town of Los Altos Hills and the Los Altos Garbage Company (LAGCo) have agreed to settle their dispute over reduced garbage rates without mediation from a third party.

City Manager Jeff Peterson agreed to postpone any mediation since LAGCo has a new general manager, Bill Jones, who also wishes to work without the use of a third party.

Jones has replaced former manager John Angin, who left LAGCo for a position in Portland, Ore. In addition, Joe Renati, a former general manager of LAGCo, has been acting as a consultant for the new contract.

"We had several lengthy meetings, and I know we can do this without a third party," Renati said. "More meetings will be scheduled and a solution is close."

At the Sept. 4 council meeting, the town reduced the rate for solid waste and recyclable collection service to $23.75 per can with an additional charge of $5 per 100 feet of driveway over the first 100 feet. Those rates went into effect Oct. 1 over the objection of LAGCo.

Angin told the council at that meeting, "Our expenses are higher than the town proposes and the only good thing is to go to mediation and come up with something for more than one year. "
