The two new members of the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District Board of Trustees said they look forward to their own education about the workings of the district.

Kim Farmer of Mountain View and Phil Faillace of Los Altos won the district's two open seats in the Nov. 5 election, taking 43.6 percent of the vote and 40.8 percent, respectively. Candidate Greg Ohls of Los Altos received 15.5 percent.

Faillace and Farmer will be sworn in to the board at its Dec. 9 meeting. The two replace Lynn Alvarado and Ann Baker, who are retiring.

Farmer, the leading vote-getter, said she was surprised about her finish. "You never know what is going to happen in an election," she said.

Farmer said that she is excited to learn more about the district as a member of the board and a parent.

"I'm going to have to hit the ground running because stuff is happening all the time," Farmer said. "I've have been focused on the campaign, and now I can concentrate about visiting the school campuses and see what is going on at all levels."

Faillace is currently a board member on the Los Altos School District, for elementary schools. Once on the high school board, a new member will be appointed by the elementary board to take his place until the next election.

"The first thing I am going to do is become a student again and learn from those who are currently on the board," Faillace said. "I am looking forward to working with those people whom I have admired."

As for the Community Advisory Committee at Los Altos High School, in which Faillace currently serves as president, "I will continue until a replacement is found. I enjoy it, but I don't think I will have enough time," he said.

Faillace's two daughters have attended schools in Los Altos. His youngest is currently a senior at Los Altos High School.

"It was great because one of the first people to congratulate me was one of her classmates who came by to pick her up for school," Faillace said.
