View, St. Francis in playoffsBy Craig WentzSpecial to the Town Crier Football roundup One month ago, both the Mountain View and St. Francis high football teams were in danger of not making the Central Coast Section playoffs. But with strong finishes to end the season, both have made the elite field and are poised for respective championships. MOUNTAIN VIEW: Mountain View (8-2) grabbed the No. 4 seed in the Division III playoffs and will host fifth-seeded Monterey (6-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday. Last season, Mountain View reached the Division III championship game as a No. 4 seed. And with its 35-0 dismantling of Cupertino last Friday, it clinched second place in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division with a 5-1 mark. The Spartan defense was the story against Cupertino, holding the Pioneer offense to only 106 total yards behind the play of Chris Ehlers (seven tackles, one sack), Martin Corpuz (eight tackles, 80-yard interception for a touchdown), Shawn Sanner and James Raglin. Running back Milo Lewis led the Spartan offense with 157 yards rushing on 20 carries and a touchdown. "Our scout team in practice did a great job of preparing our defense for Cupertino," said Spartan defensive coordinator Karl Zierhut. ST. FRANCIS: St. Francis and Bellarmine finished as co-champions of the West Catholic Athletic League with 4-1 marks. But since the Lancers lost to the Bells earlier in the year, they earned the second seed out of the WCAL and will begin their quest for a sixth straight CCS Division I title with a rematch at No. 2 seed Live Oak 7 p.m. Friday. The seventh-seeded Lancers (4-6 overall) lost to Live Oak (8-1-1) to open the year, and the Acorns want revenge on St. Francis for knocking them out of the playoffs last season in the semifinals. St. Francis finished the regular season with its fourth straight win last Saturday by wrecking Riordan 38-6 behind Charles Tharp's 141 yards on 13 carries and four touchdowns. Tharp now has 1,527 yards rushing on 208 carries (7.3 per carry) and 14 touchdowns for the season. LOS ALTOS: Los Altos (1-9) finished its topsy-turvy season with a 15-0 loss at the hands of Santa Clara at home last Friday. Los Altos' highlight of the year was its win over winless Lynbrook two weeks ago that snapped a 15-game losing streak. FOOTHILL COLLEGE: The Owls (2-4 conference, 3-6 overall) lost 39-20 to Chabot over the weekend and host De Anza (1-8 overall) 1 p.m. Saturday in their final regular-season game. Tops for Foothill, which trailed 27-20 at the half, was William Holloway's 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. |
