Minor asbestos removal will be done by taking out the floor tiles that contain low levels in the glue, which was used to lay the tiles. Town Crier Staff Writer The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District board members accepted a bid for the classroom renovation work at a special meeting on Nov. 18. The special meeting followed the regular monthly meeting of the district's Construction Overview Committee (COC). The COC, in charge of reviewing all work done on the five-year, $58 million facilities renovation project, looked over the lowest bid proposal, from Gonzalves and Stronck in San Carlos, and recommended the board to approve the bid proposal. Gonzalves and Stronck's base bid was $1.027 million. The amount budgeted for the renovation "A" project by the district is more than $1.029 million. The budget also provides funds for a 6 percent change-order allowance in case there are additional charges. "The board approved $1.039 million to accept the bid contract," said Diane Fischer, assistant to the superintendent. "Additionally, the board approved the superintendent to execute change orders not to exceed $49,836." Eight bids were received by the district. The bids ranged from $1.027 million to $1.327 million. Swenson and Associates, the construction company that completed the summer utilities work at the high schools, was the third highest bidder. "The (bid amount) spread is not unusual," said Bob Golton, assistant superintendent of business services. "Gonzalves and Stronck was very consistent and the lowest bidder on all components and alternatives in the project." Existing classrooms will be renovated according to specifics listed in the budget proposal. The board also approved two alternate upgrades not planned originally. Door hardware will be upgraded and panic bars, push-door arm openers, will be installed to replace existing lever handles. Classrooms will have 4-by-8 foot cabinets installed for extra storage. Gonzalves and Stronck began work at Los Altos High School's 200 wing on Nov. 20, and on Mountain View High School's 100 wing last Monday. |
