Hidden Villa holiday storytelling

Enjoy hot cider and snuggle up by the fireplace as storyteller Megumi shares tales from Japanese, Jewish and other traditions at 7 p.m. on Dec. 13.

The storytelling will be held at Hidden Villa's Visitors Welcome Center, located on the educational farm and wilderness preserve in Los Altos Hills.

The cost is $6 for a child, $8 for an adult and $24 for a family of four. Reservations are required.

Sierra historian to give talk

Los Altos resident author and publisher Genny Smith will speak and show slides to the Los Altos Hills Historical Society 3 p.m. Dec. 8 to relay the story of Dr. Nellie, one of the first women physicians in California.

Dr. Nellie, who graduated from a San Francisco medical school in 1896, hung out her shingle in the frontier town of Bishop, east of the Sierra.

Smith is considered an expert on the history and geology of lands east of the Sierra Nevada Crest.

Smith has been captivated by the area since she first owned a cabin at Mammoth Lake in 1957.

The meeting will be held at a private Los Altos Hills home.

'Toys of the Turn' at History House

The Los Altos History House Museum will hold an open house 1-5 p.m. today to showcase the new museum exhibit, "Toys of the Turn."

Guests will have the opportunity to view this latest exhibit featuring a variety of toys from the late 19th through early 20th centuries.

The open house also will feature holiday decorations and refreshments. Admission is free.

Gingerbread showhouse exhibit

Sweet memories of holidays past will be recalled by visitors to a gingerbread showhouse exhibit, to be featured Dec. 9-13 at Hillview Community Center in Los Altos, courtesy of the Los Altos Recreation Department.

Organizers invite residents of all ages to create a cookie or gingerbread house for the display. Entries can be submitted by individuals or groups of all ages.

All ingredients used for the houses must be edible. For more information or an entry form, call 941-0950.

Public display of the exhibit will be in Room 2 at the Hillview center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos, beginning 1 p.m. Dec. 9.

Volunteers recognition day

The 14th annual Los Altos-Los Altos Hills Community Volunteer Service Awards Luncheon, which recognizes outstanding volunteers for the year, will be held Friday at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road, Los Altos.

The event gets under way with refreshments at 11:45 a.m. followed by lunch at 12:15 p.m. and an award presentation at 12:45 p.m.

Admission to the event is $20. For reservations, send a check by Friday to the Volunteer Awards Committee, P.O. Box 1851, Los Altos 94023. Tickets will be held at the door.

Santa appearance at Rancho

Santa will appear noon to 4 p.m. daily through Dec. 24 at the Rancho Shopping Center, Springer Road and Foothill Expressway, in Los Altos, to entertain children and adults alike.

Santa will be available for gift requests and photos on the Oak Tree Stage next to the Sanwa Bank Building.

Gallery 9 holiday show

Gallery 9 in Los Altos is featuring its holiday show, "Let There Be Light," through Dec. 24 at the gallery, 143 Main St. The exhibition features the works of member artists, including hand-made crafts, Christmas ornaments and cards and miniature paintings for holiday gifts.

Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Donations sought for tree lights

Los Altos Village Association organizers are seeking donations for holiday lights that adorn approximately 125 downtown trees during the month of December.

The donations go to cover costs of new light strings, maintenance, repair and the labor force to put lights up and take them down. Organizers said they need to raise approximately $10,000.

Contributors can choose to either sponsor an entire tree or contribute $1 and become eligible for a shopping spree. Contributions can be made to "Christmas Decoration Fund," P.O. Box 1076, Los Altos 94023. For more information, call 949-5282.
