Egan students place in top 10 in math contest

Six eighth graders from Egan Intermediate School in Los Altos placed in the top 10 at the 15th annual Crystal Springs Uplands Middle School Math Contest on Nov. 23 in Hillsborough.

More than 350 contestants from 12 Bay Area middle schools competed. Geoffrey Patterson and Chris Lin of Egan led the way in the individual competition, finishing in first and second place. Chris Chan, Daniel Cheng, Beth Wildanger, and David Wong all placed in the top 10.

Egan students continued their winning ways in the team competition by finishing in first place.

In the seventh grade individual competition, Simone Manganelli placed third. The seventh grade team of Manganelli, Jamie Beard, Charity Ting, Klaus Aichelen finished fourth in the team competition.

This was Egan Intermediate School's first time participating in this contest. The seventh and eighth grade students representing Egan were selected from the school's MathCounts program. MathCounts is a math enrichment program offered to all Egan students. Currently, there are 40 students in the program headed by Nancy Wildanger. The students are coached by Emily Wildanger and Robbie Jahn of Los Altos High School.
