Foothill College roundup

Every team's creed includes beating its local rival. And with quarterback Creed Young at the helm, Foothill College disposed of De Anza 42-22 on Nov. 23 to close out its football season in style.

Young not only completed 12 of 20 passes for 212 yards and four touchdowns, but he also ran the ball in from the 1-yard line for a score. On the receiving end of Young's TD passes were Victor Ferguson with two (12 and 45 yards) and Damien Rose and Rich Crowell with snags of 45 and 7 yards, respectively.

In a game in which Foothill (3-4 Coast Conference, 4-6 overall) led 28-16 at the half, Chris Guthrie amassed 20 tackles to set a new Owl record of 164, upending Ray Garcia's former top mark of 158. Bobby Enosa also chipped in with eight tackles and two sacks.

Foothill Coach Marshal Sperbeck said it was a back-and-forth game and that the Owls' sluggish third quarter allowed De Anza (1-9 overall) to keep things interesting.

"Our kids were pretty fired up for the game. It was emotional because it was a rivalry game and some of the players had played against each other in high school," he said.

Tops on offense for Foothill this season was running back Wilton Paogofie with 742 yards rushing for 11 touchdowns; Young completed 49 of 103 passes for 885 yards and seven TDs.

VOLLEYBALL: The Lady Owls (8-2) finished second in conference behind City College of San Francisco (10-0) and nabbed the No. 4 ranking for the NorCal playoffs.

Host Foothill (12-4 overall) defeated Shasta in three games in the first round last Tuesday, and downed De Anza in four on Saturday to advance to this weekend's state tournament at San Joaquin Delta in Stockton. The top four schools from both Northern and Southern California will vie for the title. Foothill takes on Golden West (22-1) at 6 p.m. Friday.
