The Los Altos Community Foundation approved a $7,500 grant last week for the Bus Barn Stage Company and another $2,500 grant for Los Altos schools' playing fields.

Foundation members, at their Jan. 29 meeting, also discussed providing money for improvements at Foothill College's Smithwick Theater.

Member Vicki Reeder, reporting on the status of the Bus Barn community theater, said "attendance was down for 'What I did last Summer,' but was better for 'How The Other Half Loves.'

"We need to expand our board and improve the facility," Reeder said. "There is a future problem of location because the History House (expansion) project will be located where the Bus Barn trailer is presently located."

The mediation program is coming along nicely, according to member Al Traficanti.

"We started with two and a half cases a month and are up to three now, and increasing monthly," Traficanti said. "Mediators are resolving more cases and we received 650 calls asking for information."

Ralph Vetterlein, mediation chairman, reported there were only two cases that were not resolved.

Member Jean Carmichael reported on the Valentine fund-raiser at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Los Altos Golf & Country Club. The dance is open to anyone and proceeds will benefit foundation projects such as the Bus Barn, Leadership Education Advantage and the mediation program.

The Community Foundation provides management of funds and trusts outside its own. The foundation also manages the Festival of Lights fund, Griffin House fund, Los Altos History House fund, Marion Jackston fund, Tuck Shepherd fund, Singer family fund and the Denny Spangler fund.
