SPORTS FEVER: Twisters Kids, 2639 Terminal Blvd. in Mountain View, offers "Sport-a-Thon '97" for boys and girls ages 3-12 from 6-9:45 p.m. Saturday. Participants will enjoy gymnastics, rock climbing, dinner, games and crafts in a safe atmosphere with certified adult supervision. TEEING OFF: Professional golfer Christie Smith will drive home essential techniques the next few months at Stanford Golf Schools. Upcoming clinics: sand and specialty shots, 1-5 p.m. Feb. 28; putting and chipping, 8 a.m. to noon March 1; pitching and full swing, 8 a.m. to noon March 2. Sessions tee off at Stanford University. VIRGINIA BOUND: Los Altos High senior Kristi Winters recently signed a letter-of-intent to play volleyball next season for the University of Virginia on a grant-in-aid. The three-year starter for the Eagles and first-team, all-league selection each season, Winters should make an impact on the Cavaliers' program right away, according to Coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton. "For a player her age, she is as experienced as they come. She knows the game, both mentally and physically, and we hope she can become a stabilizing presence on the court," she said. "Kristi is also fundamentally sound, and this will allow her to be a player we look to in clutch situations."

REC REPORT: The Mountain View Recreation Division will begin accepting softball and four-on-four flag football registration on Feb. 24. In order to officially register, teams must submit a roster with a minimum of 12 players for softball and six for football. Entry fees are $450 for men's softball and football, and $425 for co-ed softball. For more information, call 903-6404.
