Members attending the Feb. 19 meeting agreed the foundation could use the approximately 1,400-square-foot home to keep files and house an administrative staff. The house was among several items on the agenda at last week's meeting. Also discussed was the foundation's first-ever Valentine's Day party, held Feb. 15. Although the final accounting is not complete, organizers noted 198 people attending the event and its silent auction raised $2,500. "The event was an absolute unqualified success," said Francis La Poll, a foundation member. "The affair gave us a contact with the entire community." In other meeting discussion, Ralph Vetterlein, chairman of the Los Altos Mediation Project, said he is looking for volunteers who can speak either Spanish or Chinese. Vetterlein said the mediation program is becoming popular with residents, but language differences among neighbors arise and volunteers who can speak other languages are necessary to settle neighborhood disputes. Although members have no part in the role of fund-raising activities in Los Altos, the foundation keeps track of the ongoing campaigns. Fund-raisers presently under consideration are: History House: a new $775,000 building campaign ($2 million project) for the Los Altos Historical Museum. Bus Barn Theatre: $70,000 for construction of a lobby, requested by the Bus Barn Advisory Committee. St. William School: $1 million to $2 million to improve the 5.5-acre site on Rosita Avenue. Foothill College Smithwick Theater: $270,000 for refurbishing, requested by the Foothill Foundation Committee. Griffin House: $2 million to $3 million for preservation and remodeling requested by the Committee to Save Griffin House. Veterans Memorial: A $100,000 goal to build a monument in Los Altos. YMCA -Phase II: A $3 million campaign to build a gymnasium and expand other facilities. |
