Jermel Gilliard didn't score his first field goal until the start of the second half last Thursday, but his leadership and drive - along with his 12 points - helped Crittenden Middle School of Mountain View notch the Valley Junior High School Athletic League championship.

With a 39-30 win over Egan Intermediate of Los Altos, the Crittenden eighth-grade boys team avenged an earlier-season 63-51 loss to Egan and finished with a 10-1 record. Egan suffered its first loss and completed its season 12-1.

Egan held tight with Crittenden until the five-minute mark of the third quarter, when Crittenden went on a 10-0 run and pulled away with a 35-25 lead.

Also lighting up the scoreboard for Crittenden was jump-shot specialist Emanuelle Maldonado, who converted from the left, right and center and totaled 14 points.

Leading the charge for Egan was 6-foot-5 center Geoff Patterson with 10 points, including excellent free-throw shooting; Cameron Matthews, who ran the court well, dished off some fine passes and scored six points; and Greg Page, who tallied eight points with outside jumpers.

Egan Coach Don Peglow noted that his team's hard work and hustle were keys to its success this season. "They are an incredibly mature group of kids. I had a ball with them," he said.

Patterson led the Egan pack with an average of 15 points per game, followed by Page with nine and Martin Lam with eight.
