25 years ago in the Town Crier

The May 3, 1972 issue of the Town Crier reported that 21 students from the Los Altos School District helped man the American Cancer Society's booth at a two-day Health Fair at De Anza College. The booth was named one of the three or four most popular among 62 exhibits.

Features the booth were the mannequin, Smoking Sam, and specimens of lungs, both healthy and severely damaged. The students hoped the display and their explanations would scare smokers into throwing away their cigarettes.

Awalt High held their second annual Shakespeare Faire, turning back the clock 400 years to capture the Elizabethan era. Donning period costumes, students and faculty gave informal presentations of Shakespearean scenes, held jousting exhibitions, became roving minstrels and generally turned the campus back to the Renaissance period.

Los Altans Joseph and Marion Gurr opened the 1972 yachting season by winning "best decorated large boat" honors in the Sequoia Yacht Club opening day parade for their artistic touch on their boat, "The Kanoa." The boats were judged on how well their decorations fit the boat parade theme, "It's a Small, Small World."

50 years ago in the Los Altos NewsThe May 1, 1947 edition of the Los Altos News noted that observance of Public Schools Week in Los Altos was termed a success. More than 1,000 persons visited open house at the local school and 309 parents and friends were served lunch, at 25 cents each, at the school cafetorium during the two weeks it was pen to the public. Special events included a spelling contest, a music program and athletic events.

To gain interest and support construction of a local swimming pool, members of the 1947 L Altos Business Association were hosts a free public dance held t Legion Hall on First Street. Fun, refreshments and surprises were promised in addition to Bill Williams and his orchestra.

local businesses, Denny's Coffee Shop and Joseph Zingarelli's Barber Shop, changed hands. Mr. and Mrs. James M. took over active management of coffee shop and renamed it The Village Fountain. They planned toe hot food, fountain dishes and salad. Zingarelli, sold his shop to Isaac Kerr of Redwood City, said he would continue to work in the shop.
