After a possible gang stabbing in Grant Plaza last Thursday, a Los Altos High School senior is at Stanford hospital in serious condition, and a De Anza College student is in custody on charges of attempted homicide.

Mountain View police responded to reports of a youth gang fight at 2:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Grant Plaza at 121 E. El Camino Real. They found the 18-year-old stabbing victim.

The suspects had scattered and left the scene, said Julie Rand, media spokeswoman with the Mountain View Police Department.

With the help of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, 14 witnesses were found and eight brought back to the Mountain View Police Department for questioning, Rand said.

All except the suspect were released.

Police arrested Mayito Guzman, 21, of Sunnyvale on charges of attempted homicide, possession of controlled substance and possession of stolen property. Guzman also had a parole hold on him, Rand said.

The victim is in critical condition, Rand said.

"Due to the youth gang implications in this case, the victim's identity remains confidential," Rand said.

Kathy Sulaver, assistant principal at the high school, said the school is concerned about the student and has been in contact with the student's family.

Sources close to the student said that the student had stopped at Walgreen's Drug Store in Grant Plaza for an errand on the way home from school when the attack occurred.

Police said that the investigation is continuing.
