St. Francis golfers sink league championship

St. Francis' golfers finally got back at Bellarmine last week after losing to the Bells twice during West Catholic Athletic League regular-season play.

In the league championship on April 28 at the par-72 Sharon Heights course, the Lancers took first with 384 points, followed by Bellarmine with 392 and St. Ignatius with 398. It is St. Francis' first league championship in several years.

Tops for St. Francis were Cole Duncan and Nick Arata with 74s and Andy Miller with 75.

Both St. Francis and Bellarmine qualify for this week's Central Coast Section tournament.

Also making his way through to the CCS tourney was Pinewood's Adam Levin, who scored a 79 during the Peninsula Individual Tournament at Sharon Heights last Thursday.

BADMINTON: Los Altos sisters Azadeh and Bahareh Rahmatian recently finished up the Eagles' league season with a combined 27 wins at singles. Azadeh, a senior, plays at No. 1 and notched a 12-3 record; Bahareh, a sophomore No. 2 player, completed a perfect 15-0 mark.

Los Altos completed the regular season with victories over Fremont (10-5), Los Gatos (11-4) and Santa Clara (11-4).

SWIMMING & DIVING: Mountain View's Marie Marsman won both the 50-meter freestyle (25.66) and 100-meter freestyle (56.16) at the girls Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division finals last week.

In the girls SCVAL De Anza Division finals, St. Francis' Adrienne Mattos placed first in the 50 free (24.22) and 100 free (52.93), and Brooke Winkler won the 200-meter individual medley (2:06.00).

And at the Independence Diving Invitational, Los Altos' Kristin Slawsen placed first on the girls' side with 294 points, and Oscar Lusth won the boys' competition with 319.30 points.

TENNIS: At the SCVAL El Camino Division championships last week, Mountain View's No. 1 singles player Ian Spaulding made it through to the final, but was downed 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (10-8) by a player from Wilcox.

In doubles action, Mountain View's duo of Matt Brunnings-Mike Zalisk defeated teammates Rusty Anderson-Brad McMinn 6-3, 6-3 to notch third place.

On the SCVAL De Anza Division side, Los Altos' No. 1 player Mike Duong placed third with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 win over an opponent from Palo Alto. In doubles, the Los Altos team of Jimmy Whitesell-Dave Elliott took fourth place.
