The Los Altos beautification committee sponsored the work day on the corner lot at Grant Road near Foothill Expressway and Newcastle Drive. Refreshments were served by the Los Altos Women's Club. Showing strength in every event, St. Simon School piled up 582 points to win the first annual South Peninsula Catholic Athletic League swim championship. There were 373 entrants in the swim meet held at Foothill College. St. Simon swimmers won 10 of 12 relay events and took 24 of 35 individual events. Los Altos High School's faculty was well represented in the elected leadership of Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District Teachers Association for the 1972-1973 school year. Chosen to guide the organization were Jay Rorick, Bob Klein, and Larry West, all of Los Altos High, and Dorothy Jensen of Mountain View High. 50 years ago in the Los Altos News The May 29, 1947, edition of the Los Altos News noted that the annual May Play Day was celebrated at the Los Altos Elementary School on May 29, 1947, with parents invited for the festivities that started at 9 a.m. More than 600 students arrived in costume on bikes and scooters they had decorated, and the day's fun included parades, dancing and sports events. The picnic lunches, available in the cafeteria for adults and under the oak trees for students, required 100 cases of orange soda, 2,400 hot dogs, 1,440 ice cream servings and 900 cupcakes plus coffee and salads. Los Altan Maxine Steineke was the 1947 winner of a $500 Stanford mathematics examination scholarship. The examination covered geometry, algebra and trigonometry and was conducted in 39 high schools throughout the state with 195 students competing. Steineke, a 16-year-old Palo Alto High School senior, planned to enter Stanford in the fall. The Los Altos Garage on First Street held a formal opening, May 22, 1947, of its new steel showroom and appliance departments.
