The historic Morgan Manor in Los Altos Hills, which served as the home of Ford Country Day School for 34 years, may become a school again as One World Montessori School, which serves pre-school children, seeks to occupy the building. Town Crier Staff Writer Morgan Manor, located on Stonebrook Court in Los Altos Hills, may be used as a school once again, reflecting a statewide trend. The manor was previously the site of the Ford Country Day School for 34 years. A conditional use permit application has been submitted to the Town of Los Altos Hills by One World Montessori School, Inc. Last summer, the state legislature mandated the reduction of class size in grades K-3 to be phased in over a three-year period. School districts are now reclaiming and reopening school sites leased by private schools and child care centers. The Montessori School is being ousted from its present location at Eaton School in Cupertino by the Cupertino School District, which needs to use the site to accommodate a new influx of students. The Cupertino Union School District plans to reopen Eaton again as a public school Jan. 1, 1998. Montessori School is a non-profit school, established in 1979, and serves 235 children between 18 months and 12 years. It provides an integrated environment for children with a wide range of skills and abilities. The school's individual attention and learning program allows every child, regardless of ability, to participate. Mixed age groupings allow children to find individuals with similar interests and abilities. Converting the manor back to a school will help alleviate a shortage of child care in this area. Public schools in Los Altos are nearing capacity and real estate brokers are now disclosing that new children moving into the area may not be able to attend their neighborhood schools, depending on their grade level. The conditional use permit application proposes to mitigate the impact of school traffic by offering shuttle service for students from off-site locations. Morgan Manor, a registered historic landmark, was built in 1914 by Percy T. Morgan, a relative of J. P. Morgan. |
