Recent graduates from two local high schools helped the North team beat the South, 27-19, in the 23rd Annual Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game on July 23. Halfback Charles Tharp, who starred at St. Francis High School last season, led all rushers with 148 yards on 15 carries. Tharp set-up the North's first touchdown with a 76-yard gallop in the opening quarter. Tharp will take his sizable skills to the University of Hawaii in the fall on a football scholarship. Surprisingly, Hawaii was the only Division I school to offer a scholarship to Tharp, who led the Lancers to a Central Coast Section championship last season. Former Mountain View High School standout Milo Lewis also grabbed a share of the spotlight at the all-star game. However, he did so on special teams. Lewis, a halfback/linebacker headed to San Francisco City College, opened the second half with a dazzling 97-yard return for a touchdown. This put the North ahead 21-12, which proved to be an insurmountable lead. The game, played at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, showcased Santa Clara County's top players in the class of 1997. More than 4,000 people attended the game, with the proceeds going to several local charities. |
