Scott Vermeer, a native Los Altos resident, graduated from the FBI National Academy in June.

Vermeer, a captain in the Redwood City Police Department, attended the 11-week course of advanced investigative, management and fitness training. The program is for selected executives with a proven record as a professional within his or her agency.

Vermeer attended Pinewood School and then Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose. He holds a bachelor's degree in business management and is currently working toward a master's degree in criminal justice administration.

In addition to his police duties, Vermeer and his wife, Kerry, own and operate Lappert's Ice Cream and Coffee in the Rancho Shopping Center. They have two sons and are expecting their third child any day.

Judy Boore of Los Altos went to Guam Aug. 14 to help the Red Cross give aid to victims, volunteers and emergency workers in the wake of the Korean Air Flight 801 crash.

Boore, on her 10th assignment with the Red Cross, had returned two days earlier from New Orleans, where the Red Cross sheltered more than 5,600 people in the wake of Hurricane Danny.

Boore is a self-employed marriage and family counselor and teaches Red Cross disaster mental health classes.

Jessie Hewins, 13, of Los Altos, was among 10 middle school finalists in an "Invention of the Future" contest sponsored by Intel Corp. of Santa Clara. The 10 finalists, from Daly City to Santa Cruz, were honored Aug. 13 at McEnery Convention Center in San Jose.

Hewins was named a finalist for creating a "heart rate monitor-locator."

The contest was held in conjunction with a touring "America's Smithsonian" exhibition. The exhibition features key high-tech inventions.

The grand prize winner, Daniel Wootan of Santa Cruz, received an Intel computer system for his invention, a "Decrinkler," which takes wrinkles out of dollar bills for use in vending machines.
