Town Crier Staff Report

The Los Altos Tennis Team will rule the Bay Area for at least one more year.

On Aug. 10, the men's team claimed its second-consecutive title at the United States Tennis Association's Bay Area Championships in Alameda.

Playing in the 3.0 division, the squad captured the crown with a 3-2 win over Oakland in the finals. Los Altos' No. 1 doubles team - consisting of Cliff Noll and Wayne Neylan - provided the key victory that day.

Other wins came from No. 1 singles player Victor Martindale, plus the No. 2 doubles team of Jim Finch and Pierre Patkay.

The team's pursuit of the championship started Aug. 8 with a sweep of Sonoma, 5-0. The following day, Los Altos toppled San Mateo in the semifinals, 3-2.

"We played over our heads," said team captain Jan Frey, who went 1-2 in singles on the weekend. "Some of the players who won weren't expected to win. There were some tremendous performances out there."

Los Altos, which plays out of Fremont Hills Country Club, now advances to the USTA's Northern California Tennis Championships in Carmel. The tournament starts Friday, with the championship match scheduled for Sunday. The winner advances to the USTA's National Championships, which start Oct. 25 in Tucson, Arizona.

"We're going to be practicing a lot to get ready for it," Frey said of the Northern California tourney. "We'll be facing some tough competition."

Last year, Los Altos finished second at the competition with a 1-1 record.
