Murdock Charitable Trust Grant to work with Pat Spencer, Associate Professor of Geology, in studying sediments of the Walla Walla Valley and Columbia Basin areas. Jacalyn Price, a student at Los Altos High School, was among the 600 outstanding students chosen internationally to participate in the Cornell University Summer College this summer. The students took college courses and explored career options in the program's seminars. The program was created to provide high school students the chance to experience college before they begin filling out college applications. Los Altos resident Matt Chambers received an Honorable Mention for his entry in the fifth-sixth grade Geology/Earth Science category at the 1997 Education Expo department at the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona. Rick Carreiro, a teacher at Graham Middle School in Mountain View, was among the 16 teachers from throughout the United States who participated in the Beloit College/Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Workshop for Middle School and High School Teachers at Beloit College in July. During the workshop, Carreiro was able to plan and visualize classroom activities using cutting-edge computer software. Carole Flores, a first grade teacher at Santa Rita Elementary School, and Barbara Kingsley, a teacher at Mountain View High School, are among the 27 teachers being honored at the 28th Annual Teacher Recognition Day awards ceremony, at 7 p.m., Sept. 29 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. The honorees, who represent 24 Santa Clara County public school districts, were selected by their colleagues for outstanding dedication, professionalism, community involvement, and skills in youth education. |
