Town Crier Staff Report

Today's artists are harnessing the creative power of computer programs such as Metacreations Painter and Adobe Photoshop to change the definition of what art is and how it is produced.

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, Kent Manske, visual artist and associate professor of art at Foothill College, will talk about how technology has changed the way artists create and communicate. Following Manske's talk, four artists will demonstrate how they use software to create visual images. This free-of-charge lecture will be held at the Los Altos Main Library from 7-9 p.m. and is sponsored by the City of Los Altos, Friends of the Los Altos Library, and the Los Altos Arts Committee.

These five artists, including Manske, are part of an 11-artist digital exhibit at the library that features an interactive two- and three-dimensional Web site and hard copy works of digitally created art that include paintings, drawings, photo collage, and three-dimensional rendering. The Web site address is http://www-lib.co.santa-clara.ca.us/LosAltos/digiart/index.htm

According to Manske, art and the computer are empowering tools that can serve as catalysts for change as artists explore who they are at the end of the 20th century.

The lecture, demonstrations, and the accompanying exhibit should stimulate attendees to expand how they use their home computers, he said.

The library exhibit opened Sept. 6 and runs through Nov. 7. The library is located at 13 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos. For more information, call 948-7412.
