According to the Oct. 25, 1972, issue of the Town Crier, the first art and talent festival staged, managed, directed and participated in by Awalt High School (now Mountain View High School) students was called an outstanding success. It was held during school hours Oct. 17 and 18, 1972, and also for parents attending "Back to School" night. The fine arts displays and other demonstrations were viewed with awe by those watching.

Nicole Mans of Los Altos Hills was among the six seniors at Castilleja School to be named semifinalists in the 1998 National Merit Scholarship Program. David Hoa of Los Altos was among the 18 students at Bellarmine College Preparatory to named a semifinalist in National Merit Scholarship Program. Edward Hsu of Los Altos Hills and Alexander Pearson of Mountain View were among the seven students at Menlo School to be named semifinalists. Sara LaBoskey of Los Altos was among the 11 students who were named Commended Students in the Merit Scholarship program. The scholarship program, sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, is awarded to students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. More than 1.1 million students participated in the Preliminary SAT qualifying test. About 14,000 participants are expected to become finalists. Approximately 35,000 students throughout the United States are being honored as Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise. These students placed among the top five percent of all program participants.

Homestead grads hike Pacific Crest Trail for MS

After Katrina Reinhardt and Justin Davis pledged to walk the Pacific Crest Trail to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, few people expected the Homestead High School graduates to complete the 2,700 mile trek. The trail stretches from the Mexican border to Canada across dessert, flatlands and mountains. Both Reinhardt, 20, and Davis, 21, admitted, they, too, had doubts.
