Domestic violence conference this weekend

Los Altos Police Chief Lucy Carlton will be welcoming participants at the county's fifth annual conference on domestic violence that begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in San Jose.

The two-day conference offers round-table sessions, keynote speakers and workshops for those working in the field of domestic violence, those involved in domestic violence and anyone interested in discussions involving innovative ideas.

Many local residents will be participating in this year's conference, "Ending Family Violence: A Community Challenge."

Carlton, chairwoman of the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council, and Los Altos Hills resident, Judge Len Edwards, a nationally recognized juvenile judge, will be presenting a round-table from 2-5 p.m. Thursday on "The Care and Maintenance of a Domestic Violence Council."

Many staff members from the Support Network for Battered Women of Mountain View will also be taking part.

David Lee, director of community education at the Support Network will be leading a workshop on the prevention of domestic violence from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Friday.

Suzanne Elwell, a staff attorney with the Support Network, will talk about restraining orders.

Pam Butler, a former Los Altos resident and once-battered woman, will give a workshop on victim advocacy.

The conference will be held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose.
