All are invited to participate. Songs will be familiar Christmas music and will include Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. A concert rehearsal is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, located at the corner of Cuesta Drive and El Monte Avenue. Those interested in participating should make reservations by calling 941-3496. Santa visits Rancho center As he has done for nearly 40 years, Santa Claus will again be making daily appearances at Rancho Shopping Center in Los Altos, beginning Nov. 28 through Christmas Eve. His noon to 4 p.m. appearances will be highlighted on Dec. 14 when a live reindeer named Rudolph will accompany him. Sponsoring merchants at Rancho invite people to bring the kids and their cameras. The nearby Rancho Camera Center and Studio can provide professional photography services. Call 948-7456 one day ahead of your visit for an appointment. The shopping center, located at Springer-Magdalena roads and Foothill Expressway, also is holding a food drive in which nonperishable foods are accepted for distribution to the needy. The gifts will be supplemented by Rancho merchants, including Andronico's Market. Donations sought for holiday lights The Los Altos Village Association is seeking donations for the street decorations and lights that adorn many of the trees in downtown Los Altos during the month of December. This year's lights, which will be installed by Nov. 29, cost $12,000 to put up, of which $9,000 goes for repairs. The remaining $3,000 is needed for new lights. To donate, call the village association at 949-5282. Children's author book signing Renowned children's author Shirley Climo will be making an appearance 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Linden Tree Children's Bookstore in Los Altos to discuss and sign her new book, "A Treasury of Mermaids." The event is free. Linden Tree is located at 170 State St. For more information, call 949-3390. History House needs vintage items History House of Los Altos is looking for selected items to be donated to the Museum-House collection, particularly items from the 1848-1900 period. Needed items include California statehood memorabilia, dry farming produce objects, and items from Los Altos' first businesses. The History House also is seeking volunteer assistants. Call curator Amie Heath at 948-9427 for details. Rec dept. sponsoring ski trips The Los Altos Recreation Department will be sponsoring three one-day snowboard and ski trips this winter. These trips are open to students in seventh-12th grades and the cost is $67 per trip. Excursions include travels to Kirkwood on Jan. 10, Northstar at Tahoe on Jan. 31 and Kirkwood again on March 14. The department is also sponsoring a weekend trip to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows Feb. 27-March 1. The cost of this trip is $150. Registration is taken on a first-come, first-served basis at the department, located at 97 Hillview Ave., in Los Altos. County seeking volunteers Santa Clara County supervisor Joe Simitian is accepting applications to fill vacancies on county commissions ranging from the Airport Commission and Animal Advisory Commission to the Youth Commission and the Senior Care Commission. City seeks volunteer sidewalk supes The city of Los Altos is looking for people who enjoy walking to serve as "sidewalk superintendents." Volunteers will be trained to observe city sidewalks and identify locations in need of repair. Hours are flexible. Volunteer elves needed for CSA Thanksgiving Volunteer elves and Santa helpers are needed to donate their time to help with Community Services Agency's 40th annual Thanksgiving food program and Santa Claus exchange. Volunteers sort and organize holiday food for distribution to low-income families through Nov. 26. Volunteers are also needed in the Santa Claus exchange toy and food distribution program Dec. 1- 23. Shifts are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30-4:30 p.m. For more information, call 964-4630. Children's Chorus begins rehearsals The Cantabile Children's Chorus, part of the Baroque Choral Guild Performing Groups, has begun its fall rehearsals. They are held in Los Altos at Foothills Congregational Church on Orange Avenue. Cantabile is for children from the first grade and older. Widows and Widowers Association The Mid-Peninsula Widows and Widowers Association meets 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the Los Altos Lutheran Church, 460, S. El Monte Ave., Los Altos.
