The program includes staying in Mountain View's Japanese sister city, Iwata, this July and hosting students from Japan the following summer. This two-year program provides fund-raisers to help defray travel and hosting costs. Past students and their families have held a silent auction, a rummage sale and have participated in the Mountain View Brewers' Festival to help fund the trip to Japan and pay for the costs of hosting Japanese students. Students enrolled in the last exchange, for example, paid only $400 for their two-week trip to Japan. All students who live in the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District qualify to apply for the program. Knowledge of Japanese or Japanese customs, although helpful, is not a requirement. Applications are due Dec. 15. For more information, call Karen Buell at 961-8377. |
