Since retiring in 1993 from his 25-year career as an educator in local schools, Robert Madgic has dedicated his golden years to writing about his passion - the great outdoors.

An avid outdoors man, described as a "born explorer" he enjoys fly-fishing, tennis, skiing, white-water rafting, and backpacking. The 58-year-old writes regularly for the magazines "California Fly Fisher" and "Northern California Trails" and has written for the San Jose Mercury's "Venture" section.

The former Los Altos Hills resident, who now lives in Anderson, in Shasta County, recently started his own publishing company called River Bend Books. He has published his first book, "Pursuing Wild Trout."

Madgic said his writings reflect environmental issues, particularly his trout handbook.

Madgic came to the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District in 1961 as an intern at Awalt High (now Mountain View High) while finishing his master's degree at Stanford University. He then taught two years at Homestead High School before returning to Stanford to earn his Ph.D.

Madgic returned to the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District in 1972 as vice principal at Los Altos High. He served as assistant superintendent of educational services for the district from 1981 until 1993.
