Teachers and school district administrators will make presentations and hand out information. To be eligible for the district's 98-99 kindergarten program, children must be five years old on or before Dec. 2, 1998 and reside within the boundaries of the Los Altos School District. Student pre-registration will begin at all six Los Altos elementary schools at 7 a.m. Feb. 5. Teen computer lab The City of Mountain View in conjunction with Mountain View High School are pleased to announce the opening of the Macintosh Computer Lab from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday evenings beginning Jan. 15. Cupertino board president appointed Roberta Pabst was elected president of the Cupertino Union School District Board of Education at its annual organizational meeting Dec. 9. Barry Chang was elected vice-president and Barbara Fielden was elected clerk of the board. Pabst was first elected to the board in 1995 and previously served as clerk and legislative chairperson. A former school volunteer and PTA president, Pabst also served on the district's Budget Advisory committee. She currently serves on the boards of the Sunnyvale-Cupertino American Association of University Women and the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation. Pabst resides in Los Altos with her husband and their two sons who attended Cupertino schools. Duracell scholarships The 16th annual Duracell/NSTA Scholarship Competition is open to students in grades seven through 12 and to two-person teams. Contestants are required to invent battery-powered devices that will be judged on creativity, practicality, and energy efficiency. More than $100,000 in U.S. savings bonds will be awarded to 100 winners. First place winners will receive $20,000 bonds, second place winners will receive $10,000 bonds and third place winners will receive $1,000 bonds. The entry deadline is Jan. 14. International scholarships All students in grades nine through 12 are invited to apply for the fifth annual EF Ambassador Scholarship which will include an 11-day espenses-paid tour of Europe in July. One qualified student from each state will be awarded a scholarship. The application deadline is Jan. 31. Poster contest for high school students The Christophers invite all high school students to enter their eighth annual poster contest , "You Can Make a Difference." The contest is an opportunity to share concerns, artisitc talents and imagination. Posters must be 15 by 20 inches and include the statement "You can make a difference." Entries will be judged on overall impact, effectiveness in conveying the theme, originality and artistic merit. Eight prizes will be awarded, with a first prize of $1,000.
