Town Crier Staff Report

Rene Carriere's long-range shooting wasn't enough to carry the Foothill College women's basketball team over Butte in the semifinals of the De Anza Classic Dec. 29.

The visitors from Chico withstood a furious rally by the Owls to preserve a 62-60 victory that went down to the final shot. With three seconds left, Carriere desperately fired a fade away shot from 20 feet that bounced harmlessly off the front rim.

Carriere didn't miss many other long shots on the night. The sophomore guard drilled seven three-pointers and finished with 21 points.

Backup center Diseph Igoni also helped lead the comeback, banking in a pair of baskets from close range in the final three minutes. She finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Football players honored

Three sophomores from Foothill College were recently named to the 1997 All-State Community College Football Team, Region II.

Tailback William Holloway landed a spot on the offense, while C.J. Matthews was named to the defensive secondary. Punter Brian Johnson also made the team.

Holloway gained 2,200 all-purpose yards on the year. He rushed for 1,232 yards, caught 19 passes for 233 yards and scored 10 times.

Matthews, a graduate of Gunn High, had four interceptions as a safety. Johnson averaged 41.4 yards per punt, the best mark in Northern California.
