Sister Cities welcomes guests from abroad

Los Altos Sister Cities, Inc. invites the public to its 10th annual party 6-8 p.m., Jan. 22, in the multipurpose room at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

After attendees enjoy conversation and Chinese food by Chef Chu's Restaurant, president Richard Hasenpflug will usher in new board members and explore the future relationships of current and future sister cities. Hong Wang and Yan Qin of the renowned "Melody of China" will perform classical Chinese music performed on the violin, drums and hammered dulcimer.

Also on hand will be Olga Vokueva, 28, from Los Altos' Russian sister city, Syktyvkar.

A professor of English in Russia, Olga will be teaching at Santa Rita School in Los Altos as a participant in the teaching apprenticeship program of Foothill College. Olga also will be working at Linden Tree Children's Bookstore downtown Los Altos. She will be here through May.

Los Altos Sister Cities, Inc. is a non-profit community organization interested in travel and fostering friendly ties with citizens from around the world. Relationships have blossomed with Bendigo, Australia; Syktyvkar, Russia; and Shihlin, Taiwan.

The event is free for current and new members, $10 for non-members. Membership is $15 per person, $25 per family. For more information, call Barbara Loebner at 969-0136.
