Members of the Los Altos Mediation Program, designating 1998 as "The Year of the Good Neighbor," and January as "Mediation Month," are scheduled to present a mock mediation 7:30 tonight at the Los Altos Main Library to educate the public about the process.
The free event will offer visitors a chance to meet members of the mediation program and see how mediation can save participants time, money and stress.
Mediation members, who note a 90 percent success rate in their cases, will offer options to solving disputes. They handle conflicts that range from neighborhood noise to workplace problems and tenant-landlord conflicts.
"In America, it is agreed that good neighbors are the foundation of our communities," said Ralph Vetterlein, chairman of the mediation program. "The Year of the Good Neighbor, 1998, is a voluntary communitywide program that seeks to enhance, improve and restore vital relationships between neighbors. During the year, we will be involved with specific community programs that will enable all of us to appreciate and broaden the roles we play in our neighborhoods. Everyone will be invited to participate and share in the activities."
Mediation members have designated the following months with specific themes: January - mediation month; February - good neighbor month; March - crime prevention month; April - volunteer month; May - kindness month; June - family month; July - fire prevention month; August - senior citizen month; September - community involvement month; October - government month; November - safe driving month; December - goodwill month.
