Benefit concerts for music programs

Musicians from Egan and Graham junior high schools will join Los Altos High School's jazz band, wind ensemble and orchestra for a fundraising concert and dessert buffet from 6 pm. to 9 p.m. Jan. 31 at Los Altos High School, 210 Almond Ave. Tickets are $7. All proceeds will benefit Los Altos High Band Boosters. For more information, call 948-6522.

Also, the Town Big Band will perform with jazz musicians from Los Altos High at a benefit concert from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 San Antonio Rd. Hors d' oeuvres , soft drinks and wine will be served. The dress theme is '30s, '40's and '50s. Tickets are $20. All proceeds will be donated to the music department at Los Altos High School. CAC meeting to review math

The Community Advisory Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Los Altos High School, Room 206. Topics will include an overview of the mathematics department, a construction update and a discussion of computer offerings.

Preschool open houses

Potential students and their families are invited to visit the Los Altos Parent Preschool to explore the school's science, art, music and language development programs during an open house from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Jan. 15 at 655 Magdalena Ave. , Los Altos. As a parent participation preschool, parents help organize class activities and field trips. For more information, call 948-0656.

The Mountain View Parent Nursery School is holding its annual open-house for fall enrollment. Parents and children are welcome from 10 a.m. to noon, Jan. 17 at the school, 1299 Bryant Ave. A parent informational night will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In addition to the three and four -year old morning programs, the school offers a stimulating afternoon program for 5-year-old children preparing for kindergarten. The nursery school has been awarded the prestigious national accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young children. For more information, call 969-9506.

Assembly Fellowship Program applications

Applications for the 1998-99 Assembly Fellowship Program are available to 18 college graduates or mid-career professionals interested in expanding their knowledge and understanding of the legislative process. Fellows will participate in a weekly academic seminar with legislative members, senior staff, journalists, lobbyists and state government officials while earning 12 graduate credits from California State University, Sacramento. Participants will also be paid a monthly stipend of $1,707 plus health, dental and vision benefits.

The 11-month program offers participants the opportunity to become full-time Assembly staff members who work on fiscal and policy issues in the State Capitol.

No specific major is required, but all applicants must have earned their undergraduate degrees by June 1998. Applications are available in the State Capitol office of Assembly speaker Cruz M. Bustamante or through the Center for California Studies at (916) 278-6906. The application deadline is Feb. 18.

Prevention center awarded grant

The Sobrato Family Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Child Abuse Prevention Center to support the Familias Unidas/Families United Program last November. For the past four years, the program has focused on the prevention of child abuse, domestic violence and school failure by working with families through the school and in the home. Outreach workers helped approximately 235 referred families last year by offering them resource connections when needed. For more information, call 327-8120.

Teen computer lab at Mountain View High

The City of Mountain View in conjunction with Mountain View High School are opening a Macintosh Computer Lab from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday evenings beginning Jan. 15. High school students will have access to a variety of software including word-processing documents as well as having Internet access. For more information, please call Eric Schill at 903-6404.

THAT PLACE, a teen recreation program offered through Mountain View Recreation Division, is open Friday and Saturday nights from 7-11 p.m. to high school students living in Mountain View and Los Altos.

Teens can listen to live music on Fridays and participate in games and tournaments on Saturdays.
