Special to the Town Crier Girls basketball roundup T he Mountain View High girls won an overtime thriller over visiting Los Altos High Jan. 6, squeaking out a 54-52 win. The game marked the start of the league season for both squads. Four Spartans scored in double digits: Kristi Nakano (15 points), Toccara Lee (13), Jenny Andrada (11) and Elif Kimyacioglu (11). "We had some players really step up," said Mountain View coach Karl Hawkins. "We played smart basketball." The Spartans are also adjusting to life without junior center Annie Tepe, who recently left the team to play club volleyball. On the other side, Los Altos was a bit stunned by the loss. The Eagles handled the Spartans easily last season and are expected to make the playoffs for the second straight year. Jenn Santos, reigning co-MVP of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division, led Los Altos with 22 points. Christina Fonseca scored 10 points for Los Altos and Samantha Quintero added nine for the Eagles. Los Altos regrouped after the Mountain View loss to drill visiting Cupertino 46-31 last Thursday. Santos again led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points. Mariah Pospisil chipped in 10 and Fonseca had seven. The Eagles entered this week with a 5-7 overall record. They play at Fremont today (7 p.m.). Meanwhile, Mountain View dropped to 6-7 overall with a 36-19 setback to host Saratoga last Thursday. The Spartans had trouble finding the basket and no player scored in double digits. Andrada led the team with seven points, while Nakano and Jane Pien added three each. Mountain View hosts Cupertino today (7 p.m.). Pinewood rolls past two teams The Pinewood School girls dismantled its two opponents last week. The Panthers jumped all over Mercy-Burlingame 95-25 in their league opener Jan. 6 and then disposed of Immaculate Conception 72-26 last Friday. Kacey Scheppler scored 27 points against visiting Mercy-Burlingame and Alex Cribbs had 23. Cribbs led the attack against Immaculate Conception, scoring 24 points. Lauren Smith-Hams and Sebnum Kimyacioglu had 15 points each. The Panthers came into the week with a 2-0 mark in the Private Schools Athletic League and were 14-3 overall. Pinewood hosts Valley Dublin Friday (5 p.m.). St. Francis does the splits The St. Francis High girls split its two SCVAL De Anza Division games last week. The Lancers beat host Santa Clara 45-31 Jan. 6, as Dokesha Meachum scored nine points and Chrissy Hirsch chipped in eight. On Thursday, the Lancers fell victim to visiting Monta Vista 53-41. Cindy Hirsch led St. Francis with 15 points and Meachum scored 11. The Lancers entered this week with a 1-1 league mark and 7-7 overall record. They play at Los Gatos today (7 p.m.). Homestead off to a good start The Homestead High girls opened SCVAL De Anza Division play on a good note, crushing Lynbrook 49-17 last Thursday. The host Mustangs were guided by Los Altos resident Julie Speckels, who scored 13 points. Michelle Wald added 10 points and Vickie Chiang finished with nine.
