Golden State Exam results

For the second year in a row, Los Altos students from Blach and Egan junior high schools scored above other California Algebra I students on the Golden State Exam.

About 98 percent of Los Altos students enrolled in Honors Algebra or Algebra I at the two schools took the 1997 comprehensive test. Of those students who took the test, about 84 percent were recognized by the state of California for their outstanding achievement. Only 29.8 percent of students across the state received similar recognition.

Of the 65 students from Blach who took the exam, 67.7 percent earned high honors, 12.3 percent earned honors and 13.8 percent earned school recognition.

Of the 85 students from Egan who took the exam, 40 percent earned high honors, 25. 9 percent earned honors and 10.6 percent earned school recognition.

The examination is an incentive and recognition program for students. It is a comprehensive and challenging examination that serves to identfy outstanding acheivement by students who earn the designation "Golden State Scholars."

The exam includes 35 multiple-choice questions and five written responses about algebra and geometry.
