Local author speaks tomorrow

Best-selling writer Anne Lamott will be the featured speaker at the Circle of Friends Breakfast of the Career Action Center at 7:15 a.m. tomorrow at Hyatt Rickey's in Palo Alto.

Lamott, a Bay Area native, is the author of five novels and two nonfiction books. She has been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship.

The breakfast is the first in a series of events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Career Action Center. Founded in 1973, the nonprofit organization provides career services for individuals at its Cupertino office and for thousands of employees through corporate programs in seven states.

Ikebana specialist at garden club meeting

Katsuko Thielke, master teacher of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, will be the guest speaker for the next meeting of the Garden Club of Los Altos. The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Feb. 24, in the Creekside Room of the United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos.

The public is invited. Admission is $2.

Stamp enthusiasts to discuss 'basics'

Postage stamp enthusiasts as well as those with a casual interest in stamps are invited to meetings of the Foothill Stamp Club the first and third Mondays of each month. The club will discuss the basics of preservation of collections at its next meeting, this coming Monday, followed by a viewing of slides from the American Philatelic Society on "The U.S. 1847s," the first general issue of the U.S. government.

The club holds its meetings in the second-floor room of Great Western Bank. Entrance is upstairs from the parking plaza behind the bank at 199 Main St., Los Altos. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. and adjourn about 9 p.m. For more information, call 964-8923.

Adoping children subject of meeting

Adopting children internationally will be the subject of a free general orientation meeting set for 7:30 p.m., Feb. 23, at Mountain View Business Center, 465 Fairchild Drive, Suite 215, Mountain View.

The meeting is sponsored by Bay Area Adoption Services, an international, nonprofit adoption agency that has placed more than 1,000 children from 47 countries with families in Northern California. For more information, call 964-3800.

Club Card Caper set for Saturday

Federated Women's Club of Los Altos invites the public to its annual Card Caper benefit, from 1-5 p.m. this Saturday, at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road.

The event features bridge and other card games, dessert and beverage, fashions by Hartman's of Rancho, a silent auction, country kitchen, money tree raffle and door prizes.

Chefs Who Care set for Feb. 23

The next Chefs Who Care benefit for the Community Services Agency is 5:30 p.m., Feb. 23, at the Black Forest Restaurant, 376 First St., Los Altos. Half the $24 cost of dinner will be donated to the agency, which serves meals to homeless and low-income individuals and families.

The menu will include: sauerbraten, marinated and braised beef; chicken marsala, breast of chicken sautéed in Marsala wine; and fresh sole, served with rice pilaf.
