Town Crier Staff Report

or the first time in five years, the Foothill College women's basketball team will not look down from its lofty perch atop the Coast Conference. San Jose City College made sure of that Feb. 11 on its home floor.

The Jaguars (10-0, 26-1 overall) ended the Owls' four-year reign with a 67-48 dismantling of the defending champs. The loss dropped Foothill (7-3, 13-12) into third place and ended its seven-game winning streak.

The Owls should still make the playoffs, though, unless they lose their final two games. They play at De Anza today (5:30 p.m.) and host San Mateo Friday.

There was no doubt San Jose meant business in its quest to clinch the title last week, streaking to a 9-0 lead. The Jaguars stretched the advantage to 39-24 at halftime. San Jose forced Foothill into a rash of turnovers and had no problem penetrating inside for uncontested shots.

The defense was so menacing that Foothill took only 38 shots from the floor and eight beyond the arc. Only Krista Knapp and Diseph Igoni were able to bang inside against the athleticism of San Jose. The duo combined for 20 of Foothill's 24 points.

Knapp finished with a team-high 17 points and Igoni had 15.

Men also lose to Jags

Highly ranked San Jose City College threw a relentless 40-minute full-court press at the Foothill College men's basketball team Feb. 11, but the Owls didn't break until an ejection early in the second half.

Trailing 43-38 in the opening minutes of the half, Foothill's Bobby Enosa picked up his second technical foul and an automatic pink slip to the bench.

Without the 6-foot-5, 280-pound center under the basket, the taller Jaguars took advantage and raced to an 84-60 road win.

In their first meeting, San Jose buried Foothill 104-54 with pressure defense. This time, the Owls handled the press much better - until the end. The Jaguars, ranked No. 2 in the state, rotated an entire lineup every five minutes that left the inexperienced Owls exhausted.

Thanks to Jimmy White, who scored 16 of his 24 points before the break, the Owls stayed with San Jose for most of the game.

Despite the loss, Foothill (2-5 in the Coast Conference, 9-17 overall) is still in the hunt for the playoffs. To qualify, the Owls would need to win at least one of their final two games. They travel to West Valley tonight (7 p.m.) and host Ohlone Friday.

Athletes to be honored

Fourteen athletes with perfect grade point averages will be among the honorees when Foothill salutes its scholar-athletes in an awards ceremony Friday. It will be held in the gym between a basketball doubleheader involving the men's and women's teams at around 7 p.m.
