Town Crier Staff Writer Prep soccer roundup or only the third time in school history, the Mountain View High boys soccer team has claimed a league championship. The Spartans clinched the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division title Feb. 11 with a 4-1 win over host Gunn. Tyler Renaghan paced Mountain View with two goals. A day later Benjamin Delgado scored two goals to power Mountain View to a 4-1 win at Cupertino. This allowed the Spartans to finish the league season undefeated at 9-0-3. Mountain View's overall record improved to 12-3-6. The Spartans now move on to the Central Coast Section playoffs, which start this week. The Town Crier went to press before the seedings were announced. Mountain View coach Jim McGuirk said he will look back on this season fondly, regardless of what happens in the playoffs. "We accomplished a lot this year," McGuirk said. "The team worked hard and played very well." The Spartans dominated the El Camino Division, scoring 26 goals and allowing just six. Mountain View seemed to get better as the season wore on, going 8-0-1 in its last nine games. McGuirk believes at least seven of his players should earn all-league honors, including sophomore sensation Renaghan. The forward led the team in goals scored (8) and assists (9). Other key players include goalkeeper Brodie Meyer, forward Jesus Landa and midfielders Galen Donaldson, Ashley Offensend, Michael Zalisk and Alan Henley. In other local soccer action: Eagles earn playoff spot Los Altos High's 1-0 win at Homestead last Thursday guaranteed the Eagles a spot in the CCS playoffs. And if Los Altos (7-3-1) beat Palo Alto last Saturday, the Eagles clinched the SCVAL De Anza Division title. Arend Accola scored the deciding goal against Homestead on an assist by Si Dang. Earlier last week, Los Altos tied Milpitas 2-2 and fell to Los Gatos 2-1. Mustangs stumble Homestead High's 1-0 loss to visiting Los Altos last Thursday may have damaged the team's playoff aspirations. The Mustangs went to 5-4 in the SCVAL De Anza Division and 8-7-4 overall. Earlier in the week, host Homestead beat Milpitas 1-0 on a goal by Los Altos resident Nathan Vargas. Lancers' season over? St. Francis High's season may have come to an end Feb. 11. The Lancers fell 3-2 to visiting St. Ignatius in the opening round of the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs. This put St. Francis at 7-6-6 overall, which probably won't get the team into the CCS playoffs. GIRLS St. Francis wins league The St. Francis girls soccer team clinched the SCVAL De Anza Division title with a 2-0 win over visiting Saratoga Feb. 11. Kristi Candau knocked in both goals for the Lancers and has scored 21 for the season. The Lancers upped their record to 12-0-2 in the division and 15-2-3 overall. They were expected to earn a favorable seed in this week's CCS playoffs. Titans win, lose & draw Gunn High geared up for the CCS playoffs by going 1-1-1 last week. The Titans opened the week with a 1-1 tie against league leader St. Francis Feb. 9. Gunn then dispatched host Mountain View 3-1 Feb. 11. Los Altos Hills residents Callie Withers and Christina Morrison each scored a goal for the Titans and Ja'net Lawrence scored the third. And on Feb. 12, Gunn dropped a 3-1 decision at Saratoga. This put the Titans at 9-2-2 in the SCVAL De Anza Division and 12-4-2 overall. Gunn has enough wins to place at least third in the league, guaranteeing the squad a playoff berth. Wildcats handle Eagles Los Gatos whipped host Los Altos 5-1 Feb. 11. The Eagles' goal was scored by Kari Salmon. |
