Mustangs to skip CCS

Even if Homestead beats visiting Gunn today, the Mustangs will not go to the playoffs.

A win would improve Homestead's SCVAL El Camino Division record to 6-6 - the minimum requirement for a playoff berth - but the team will skip the postseason just the same. The squad decided before the season that it would refuse a playoff bid if it did not finish above .500, according to Homestead athletic director Rob Ralph.

The Mustangs (7-15 overall) split their two games last week. They fell at Mountain View 43-41 last Thursday and beat Saratoga 46-41 Feb. 10. Brian Holm led Homestead with 16 points against Saratoga. Pat Cabell of Los Altos added six.

Gunn gains playoff bid

Despite Gunn's 59-53 loss to Mountain View Feb. 10, the Titans will still make the playoffs. Gunn is 5-5 in the SCVAL El Camino Division with two games to play. But the Titans have a 13-9 overall record, which assures them a playoff berth. This will be Gunn's first playoff appearance in six years.

St. Francis clinches 3rd

St. Francis received 31 points and five three-pointers from Senque Carey in a 67-48 win over host Mitty Feb. 11.

The Lancers have now clinched third place in the West Catholic Athletic League with a 7-4 record. They are 19-5 overall.

Neil leads Panthers

John Neil's 36 points lifted Pinewood (6-3, 11-10) to an 82-60 drubbing of Valley Christian-Dublin Feb. 11.

Eagles fall to Wildcats

After an inconsistent non-league season, the Mountain View High boys basketball team has peaked in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division play.

Not only have the Spartans qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs, but they can also capture the league championship with two wins this week.

With a balanced scoring attack and solid defense, Mountain View owns a 7-3 record in league and is 11-12 overall.

If the first-place Spartans can win at Cupertino tonight (7 p.m.) and beat visiting Fremont Friday (7:30 p.m.), they clinch the division crown.

Mountain View put itself in this position by winning two crucial El Camino games last week. The Spartans thumped host Gunn 59-53 Feb. 10 and then came from behind to nip visiting Homestead 43-41 last Thursday.

These two wins assured the Spartans a winning record in league and an automatic invite to the CCS playoffs.

At Gunn, the Spartans used a 23-11 run in the first quarter to pull away from the Titans. Junior Seth Greenstein and senior Sean Coonce led Mountain View with 20 points each.

Greenstein poured in 22 points in the win over Homestead. The Spartans outscored the Mustangs 19-7 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

And in other local boys basketball games last week:

Los Altos slipped to 2-8 in the SCVAL De Anza Division with a 64-60 overtime loss to visiting Los Gatos Feb. 10.
