Next week the St. Francis High senior finds out if he's among the 20 players who make this national all-star team. The squad will be announced at 4:30 p.m., Monday during a nationally telecast selection show on ESPN2. The 20 players selected will be invited to play in the McDonald's All-American High School All-Star Game on March 25 in Norfolk, Va. The game will be televised on ESPN. Many of the past McDonald's All-Americans have gone on to star in college and in the NBA. This list includes Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal, Grant Hill and Patrick Ewing. The last Bay Area player to earn a place on the McDonald's team was Jason Kidd in 1992. Kidd, a product of St. Joseph High in Oakland, now stars for the Phoenix Suns. Carey hopes to join this elite list of McDonald's players. "I think I deserve to make it, but it's not the end of the world if I don't," said Carey, who will attend the University of Washington next fall. "I'm just grateful to be a nominee." St. Francis coach Steve Filios agrees that his standout point guard deserves a spot on the squad. "He's the most well-rounded of any of the nominees I can think of," Filios said. "He does it all and that should be taken into consideration." Carey leads the Lancers in scoring (23.9 points per game) assists (6.5), rebounds (9.6) and steals (2.1). Carey was voted the top player in the Central Coast Section and the West Catholic Athletic League last season. He holds five school records, including career points and games played. |
