Following the parade, a modern dance performance titled "Nostalgia" will be presented at the Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. as part of this year's celebration of the year of the tiger. It will feature Taiwanese folk music from the 1940s. Organizers said Mountain View's parade ranks behind only San Francisco's and Los Angeles' in size. Last year it attracted more than 20,000 people. This year's parade grand marshal is Jessica Yu, winner of the 1997 Oscar for best documentary. Other guests of honor include state treasurer Matt Fong, state assembly member Elaine Alquist, Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian and Milpitas Mayor Henry Manayan. Local celebrity Bubba Gong will dress in an antique Chin dynasty robe and appear as Pu Yi, The Last Emperor, following a series of traditional lion dances and music. Foothill stamp club sale The Foothill Stamp Club will hold a spot sale 7:30 p.m., March 2, in which members offer for auction their packets of stamps from two dollars upward. The club welcomes new members to its meetings held on the second floor of Great Western Bank in Los Altos the first and third Mondays of the month. Hidden Villa T-shirt contest Children and adults are invited to enter designs for Hidden Villa's 1998 camp and general T-shirts. Designs must incorporate any or all of the values of the Los Altos Hills-based environmental education center: environmental, multicultural and farm scenes. A panel of judges will choose two winning designs which will appear on T-shirts this summer. Prize money is being donated by Hidden Villa trustee Scott Chang. All entries must be received at Hidden Villa's administrative offices by 5 p.m., March 27. Entry fees per design are $3 for children ages 5-13, and $6 for youth and adults ages 14 and up. Daughters of American Revolution The Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a March 4 workshop on the genealogy of early American ancestors. The group meets the first Wednesday of each month. For more information, call 324-2826. Call for more MROSD docents The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is inviting residents to try their hand as district docents. Docents have the opportunity to share knowledge while leading hikes in the open space preserves. The district's 10-week spring docent training program begins 7 p.m., March 17, and is held every Tuesday and Saturday through May 19. Most Tuesday night training sessions will be from 7-9 p.m. at the district office in Los Altos. Saturday field sessions will be at a different preserve each week from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, extending from San Carlos to Los Gatos, is a public agency which has preserved more than 42,000 acres of diverse open space and manages 23 open space preserves. Cardiac support group at El Camino The "Heart-to-Heart" cardiac support group is offered free of charge to the community at El Camino Hospital Park Pavilion meeting room K the first and third Wednesday of each month from 4:30-6 p.m. The group is ongoing and open to anyone with heart disease. Lecture on history of coastal redwoods U.S. Geological Survey research biologist Stephen Viers will present the free public lecture "Natural History of Coastal Redwoods - Fire, Floods and Fog" at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Palo Alto City Council Chambers, 250 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto. Pianist to benefit Music In The Schools Emiliya Serebrennikova, winner of the 1996 Palo Alto Philharmonic Soloist Competition, is scheduled to perform a benefit recital this Saturday on behalf of the Music In The Schools program. The performance, set for 8 p.m. at the Palo Alto Cultural Center, 1313 Newell Road, benefits an outreach program of the Music Teachers' Association of California.
