Los Altos High came awfully close, but it won't be sending any wrestlers to the state meet next month.

Jon Wiener (173 pounds) finished fifth and Gunars Turaids (191) was sixth at last weekend's Central Coast Section Finals. Only the top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to state.

Wiener went 3-2 at the CCS meet, held last Friday and Saturday at Santa Clara High. The last time a Los Altos wrestler finished as high as fifth was 1973. Wiener ends the season with a 33-10 record.

Turaids came into the CCS tournament seeded No. 2, but ran into some tough competition over the weekend. After an early round loss, Turaids battled back to go 4-3. The senior went 35-9 on the season to set a new school record for wins.

The other 10 Los Altos wrestlers competing in the CCS meet did not place. As a team, the Eagles placed 20th with 54 points.

"We lost a ton of close matches," said Los Altos coach Nick Testa. "But we had a great year and set a lot of records."

On Feb. 14, Los Altos became the first El Camino Division team to win the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Finals. The Eagles took the title by scoring 177 points. De Anza Division champ Los Gatos finished second with 170 points.

Five Los Altos wrestlers made the finals and Tony Suber captured the 154-pound division.
